Sometimes people ask me: How many people are in the Perl community?
If this happens at a YAPC or a Perl Workshop I might ask back: What is the Perl community?
or Who is in the Perl community?.
If this is in a Perl training class, especially in a beginner
level training class, I cannot do that. I need to come up with a number and 42 does not work well.

At the end of April 2012 I collected some data on the number of members of
the Google+ and Facebook pages of Perl projects.
I left out LinkedIN but as Gautam Dey also mentioned, it would be interesting to see the numbers there too.

When showing examples in Perl I have a huge problem.
On one hand, I'd like to show only really good stuff, that assumes a recent version of perl with recent modules from CPAN.
That's what the so called Modern Perl or Enlightened Perl movements promote.
On the other hand I'd like to be useful to people working in the real world.

July was a busy month. Both the Perl 5 Maven,
and the Perl 6 Maven sites got a good head-start.
I posted on blogs.perl.org while my
personal site moved to the back seat.
Looking at the calendar, seeing its a new month fills me with energy.
Besides, today is the one year anniversary of the Perl Weekly newsletter.
So what has really happened in the last month?

I am always afraid releasing something new.
What if people will hate it? What if they find mistakes? A lot of them?
I always feel it is not finished yet, but I know it never will be.
I can always find ways to improve it.
So I go with a different strategy. I sell my e-books with lifetime free upgrade.

Do you want to be sure that when you upgrade any upstream stuff your code does not break?
No matter what changes, right?
Starting from the hardware, through the operating system, the the back-end database, down to
the smallest function of the smallest CPAN module your code depends on.
You just want to be sure everything works.
